The power of Power BI: Real world business examples

The insights and intelligence you need to operate your business and propel it forward are sitting right in front of you – in your Excel spreadsheets, Business Central, your CRM data, employee timecards, SharePoint, in your SQL server, Google Analytics, and more.

The question is how do you mine the information you need from so many different sources and bring it all together and analyze it so it works for your business?

The answer is Power BI.

Power BI is Microsoft’s business analytics platform that allows you to go from basic data sitting in a number of different applications and tools, to comprehensive dashboards and analysis that can drive efficiency and smarter decision making.

As a business leader, the theory and intent behind a new application or technology often sounds interesting, but you need to see concrete, real world Power BI examples before you invest in a new solution.

JoeDynamics has not only implemented Power BI for many of our customers. We use Power BI to run our own business.

We wanted to share some Power BI examples that demonstrate how this tool unearths greater business insights, intelligence and trends for many small and medium sized organizations.

Manufacturing insights

A mid-sized global company with a 40,000 ft2 manufacturing facility creates safety products on demand for its customers across Canada and around the world. The company needed a way to track and report on the performance of its individual operators that make their products.

JoeDynamics deployed Power BI for this client, giving them a business analytics platform that pulled data from Business Central and other systems that allowed them to see the number of units per hour for every employee operator in their facility. They were able to drill into these real time insights and make decisions about their operations, resources, and more.

Improved budget forecasting

A nonprofit housing corporation that provides affordable housing units in many cities and centers in Alberta needed a better way of tracking its long-term replacement costs. Furnaces, flooring, fridges, and more in their 900 housing units all have a lifespan and need to be replaced over time.

Power BI pulled data from a number of different sources to give this nonprofit a way of tracking and forecasting the necessary capital they would need to replace key elements in any given year, adjusted for inflation and with “what-if” parameters built in. As an example, with the knowledge that they would have to replace 50 fridges in 2030, the nonprofit is able to negotiate better pricing and rates from their vendors and suppliers.

Better oversight of projects and people

Power BI isn’t just an application JoeDynamics uses with our customers. We also use Power BI to run our business. Power BI helps us manage our many implementation and support projects and our employee time.

The real power of Power BI is its ability to pull data from so many different applications. JoeDynamics created an intuitive dashboard in Power BI that pulls data from a number of different sources so that we can see in real time what everyone at JoeDynamics is working on. We can review expected project completion dates, time allocations for each of our consultants, budget units, and more, all in one place. Its intuitive dashboard is the foundation for our weekly all-employee meetings, keeping us focused, on track, and saving time and money.

Power BI does the work for you

The best part of Power BI is that you don’t have to figure out how to make all of these different systems or applications connect and talk to each other. Power BI knows how to talk to more than a hundred different applications and tools and bring them together in one analytics platform.

Power BI will help your organization get the most out of the technology, software and applications you already use. JoeDynamics can help you get started.
